What We're Learning About!Math StrategiesCounting on - In an addition problem, start with the larger number and count on the smaller number. For example, 2+8 = ... Start with 8 (larger addend), and count on 2 (smaller addend) more... 8, 9, 10. 2+8=10.
Counting back - In a subtraction problem, start with the beginning number and count backwards the second number. For example. 10-3=.. Begin with 10 (the first subtrahend), then count backwards 3 more. 10, 9, 8, 7. 10-3=7 Counting up to - In a missing number addition problem or subtraction problem in which the numbers are near each other the answer can be found by counting up to a number. For example, 12+__=15, Begin with 12 as the starting point then, keeping track of how much you count up, count to 15. 12, 13, 14, 15. It took 3 counts to get to 15. So 12+3=15. OR 15-10 = ___. Begin with 10 as the starting point and count up to 15, keeping track of how much you count up. 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. It took 5 counts to get to 15, so 15-10 = 5.
